Position: Controller

Reports To: Executive Vice President & CEO

Approximate Salary Range: $95,000 - $110,000 commensurate with skills and experience

Responsibilities:

  • Directing all aspects of accounting operations, overseeing all transactions related to general ledger, receivables, payables and financial reporting.
  • Analyzing company's financial results with respect to trends, costs and compliance with budgets. Issuing regular status and ad hoc reports to senior management.
  • Developing and coordinating all relationships with financial institutions.
  • Developing and maintaining all necessary accounting policies and systems, including general ledger and financial reporting.
  • Ensuring that records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Assisting senior management in financial planning and results management. Work with other team members to understand revenue and cost drivers and define appropriate reports for tracking.
  • Coordinating, preparing and reviewing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Coordinating, assisting and preparation of annual budgets.
  • Coordinating and/or preparing tax schedules, returns and information.
  • Coordinating and preparing of Annual Audit and Schedules.
  • Managing relationships with various insurance providers and ensuring compliance.
  • Managing all tax planning and compliance with all required federal, state, local, payroll, property and other applicable taxes.
  • Managing cash flow.
  • Overseeing contract bookkeeper and full-time accountant.
  • Preparing payroll and coordination with PEO.
  • Administration and coordination of Benefits with insurance companies and 401K administrators.
  • Working with and managing team members, external vendors, contractors, and third-parties.
  • Interacting and maintaining accounts with external vendors, contractors, and third-parties.
  • Monitoring contracts with external vendors, contractors, and third-parties.
  • Maintaining policies and procedures for accounting and finances, including related documents.
  • Other finance, controller, insurance, employee benefits, and administrative related duties as assigned or required.

  • Duties and responsibilities can be complex and may vary greatly. They require the exercise of independent judgment and the determination of appropriate courses of action to be taken.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Additional Knowledge and Experience:

  • Requires an understanding of accounting, finance, controller, insurance, employee benefits, and administrative related duties. Knowledge required is normally equivalent to the attainment of a bachelor's degree (in a field such as accounting) and several years of relatable work experience. Being a CPA and having experience with Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains is a plus.

Additional Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to deal effectively with other HCMS employees and HCMS members. Must be organized and able to pay strict attention to detail while handling multiple tasks. Ability to plan work which requires analysis or interpretative thinking regarding more than one situation to develop solutions for problems. Ability to communicate complex ideas in a concise and understandable manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICIAL DEMANDS

Sedentary inside office work. Available a few evenings and/or weekends per year as needed. Works with volunteers. Requires ability to lift, sit, and stand for long periods of time, as well as occasionally pack and unpack boxes, supplies, and other items.

HCMS is a voluntary professional association of physicians in the Greater Houston area. With over 12,000 members, HCMS is the largest County Medical Society in the US and larger than all but eleven State Medical Associations. HCMS has a foundation, the Houston Academy of Medicine, which addresses community service and health education. The organizations have founded several organizations including the Texas Medical Center Library, Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and McGovern Health Museum.

HCMS will begin actively interviewing for this role in early to mid-November until the position is filled.
