The University of Southern Indiana (USI) invites applications for the position of Historic New Harmony Experience Coordinator. The Historic New Harmony Experience Coordinator develops strong community and public relations through management of educational experiences, visitor services and interactions with individuals and groups within the Historic New Harmony (HNH) community.

Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
  • Manage the day-to-day operations at the Atheneum/Visitors Center, including daily tour operations and interpretative tours of historic sites. Make recommendations for improvements in programming and/or operations.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate sales and interpretive staff. Develop and implement program for employee orientation and ongoing training, including conducting monthly staff meetings. Update and edit Interpreters Manual on regular basis.
  • Collect, review and submit bi-weekly employee and student timesheets.
  • Supervise daily balancing of cash registers and daily deposits of receipts, compile and review register activity reports. Provide reports and any necessary supplemental information to Assistant Director’s office for accounting purposes.
  • Monitor the appearance of the Visitor’s Center and tour sites on an ongoing basis for function, safety, and cleanliness to ensure a positive guest experience.
  • Schedule educational tours and special activities for groups, coordinating with businesses and organizations within the New Harmony community as needed.
  • Promote, show, and manage reservation requests, including staffing and set-ups, for building rentals. Prepare work orders as needed.
  • Work in coordination with HNH Administrative Associate in the selection, ordering, and merchandising of Museum shop inventory.
  • In collaboration with HNH administration, identify and investigate niche markets. Assist in the planning and execution of educational programs and experiences as requested.
  • Research, recommend and implement strategies to increase tour sales.
  • In the absence of the Assistant Director, will be the primary response to immediate or critical incidents involving guests or employees.
  • Collaborate on planning and implementation of Historic New Harmony events and programs


Essential Knowledge and Skills
  • Bachelors’ degree required.
  • Minimum of two years related experience required. Supervisory experience required. Professional experience in a museum, historic site or cultural nonprofit environment highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of microcomputers, word processing, spreadsheet, and electronic mail software required. Knowledge of “point of sale” system preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication and listening skills appropriate to representing Historic New Harmony and the University when interacting with employees, guests and donors.
  • Must possess strong customer service orientation and interpersonal skills effective to building and supporting relationships within the New Harmony community.
  • Keen attention to detail required. Numerical competency and demonstrated accuracy when handling money and financial records required.

The expected annual salary for this position is $35,600 – $37,000 commensurate with experience.
