Our
IP (Intellectual Property) Manager is responsible for early competitive patent landscape searching and analysis across Dentsply Sirona’s Product Groups and technologies. This role partners often with our global R&D team, inventors, legal and strategic marketing teams and plays a key part to identify opportunities to develop either offensive or defensive IP strategy and will manage our IP-focused processes and decision-making for a variety of projects/products, from early product conception through market launch and maintenance.
This role will be office-based at our Global Innovation Center, Charlotte, NC or can be considered for a hybrid working arrangement.
- Conduct early competitive patent landscape searching and analysis, Freedom to Operate (FTO) evaluations, Record of Inventions (ROI), support writing of patent applications, assisting with inventor remuneration programs, patent portfolio management / annuity maintenance, competitive patent monitoring, and opposition/litigation support to Legal.
- Manage IP-focused processes and decision-making across multi-functional teams that include the R&D chemist/engineer inventors, Legal, and Marketing teams
- Coordinating activities for a variety of projects/products, from early product conception through market launch and maintenance
- Review and understand existing project status and patent coverage.
- Create strong IP strategies to include patent protection/freedom to operate going forward to support New Product Launches
- Define opportunities to develop either offensive or defensive IP
- Review new product proposals and new patent applications
- Develop a solid understanding and assess competitive offering as technical subject matter expert in polymer chemistry.
- Review new competitor R&D efforts, new product offerings, patents and patent watches, and their risk/impact on R&D efforts. As needed, consult with R&D teams and Legal on competitive patent oppositions that may affect the business.
- Strategize new filings and design alternatives as needed.
- Provide early patent searches for new R&D or Strategic Marketing concepts projects
- Partner with R&D team on development activities to ensure patent landscaping is accounted for
- Support R&D efforts including long-term business strategies that can drive growth / strategic advantage.
- Collaborate often with corporate patent attorney(s) to review ongoing projects and to discuss patentability (strategize new patent applications) and FTO priorities enabling new product launches.
- Support innovation pipeline development (multi-year planning) with analysis of competitive patents (innovation focus/trends).
Educational Requirements:
- B.S. required in biology, chemistry, life sciences, engineering, bioengineering, medicine, or dentistry; advanced degree preferred.
Years and Type of Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in patent management and/or as a patent creator supporting end to end process.
- Minimum of 2 years’ supporting patents within new product development.
- Experience working cross-functionally (e.g., with Legal, Marketing and R&D teams).
Key Required Skills, Knowledge and Capabilities:
- Fluent in English
- Prior competency with patent search database/analysis tool(s), and effective searching strategies/techniques. Intermediate-to-advance experience a plus.
- Ability to travel to domestic and internally, up to 10%
- Strong written communication skills with experience writing patent applications.
- Excellent computer skills and MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Ability to build productive relationships in an international organization.
- Attention to details, and strong organizational and priority-setting skills.
Strongly Preferred:
- Polymer chemistry background.
- Experience in the medical device or pharma industry.
- German fluency is a plus.
- Some prior experience with US and/or international patent law / procedures and contracts/agreements (NDA and/or licensing).
- Registered U.S. Patent Agent, current or former patent examiner experience, or QPIP is a plus.
