  • SMSI, LLC is seeking a HVAC Mechanical Engineer - HVAC Design to provide support to assignments at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL),Oak Ridge , and Savannah River . Completes assigned tasks under routine supervision and technical direction. The need is immediate. Position is direct hire and is a full-time position.

    The successful candidate will design HVAC and Plumbing/Piping system for a variety of facility projects. Tasks include developing design calculations, process flow diagrams, sequences of operation, equipment selection and layout, ductwork and piping sizing and layout, support of project proposals, interdisciplinary coordination and participating of QA/QC process. Part time efforts will be devoted to site inspection and construction administration. This position is primarily a leadership role and will be part of a design team environment.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor s degree (B. S.) in Mechanical Engineering from accredited program.
    • A minimum of 2 to ten (10) years related experience in HVAC systems.
    • Candidate may have their Professional Engineering (PE) license in SC, TN or NM
    • Experience with HVAC systems in nuclear facility environment or nuclear equipment in unique environments .
    • Position may require the ability to manage other engineers and designers.
    • Experience interfacing with client contacts.
    • Strong experience with thermal load calculation and energy modeling for mechanical systems.
    • Strong experience in calculating and sizing of mechanical equipment including AHUs, fans and pumps.
    • Strong experience in sizing and laying out ductwork and hydronic piping systems.
    • Must be familiar with AutoCAD or other CADD systems
    • Must have experience Revit building information modeling software.
    • Client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.
    • Ability to meet vaccination mandate requirements for Department of Energy (DOE) client site access for this position is strongly preferred.

    Responsibilities

    • Must be willing to work in a design team environment, including directing the work of junior engineers and designers, and delegating work as required as well as take design direction from senior-level engineers
    • Interdisciplinary coordination
    • Develop calculations, flow diagrams, and specifications
    • Size and layout ductwork, hydronic and plumbing piping systems
    • Lead QA/QC processes
    • Proficient with codes, standards and guidelines and especially ASHRAE standards

  • US Citizenship
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening test
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Capability with MS Office Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interface with clients, contractors, and consultants on a day-to-day basis.

Physical Requirements

  • Requires the ability to sit for extended periods at a computer workstation.
  • Be able to work in an environment with open discussions and visitors without getting distracted.
  • May be required to lift up to 20 lbs.
