Mechanical Maintenance Project Manager (Air Brake)

Denver Transit Operators, (DTO) is a privately held company that has a 29-year contract with RTD to operate and maintain the new commuter rail system within the Greater Denver Metro area.
Denver Transit Operators is looking for a self -motivated individual who possess an eagerness to learn new systems and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems while working as a project manager for our railcar braking system. You will be working out of DTO’s state-of-the-art maintenance facility located in the heart of Metro Denver, built in 2015 to service our advanced Electric Railcars.
This is a full-time position with a starting salary of $85,000 to $105,000 annually. Higher wages are commensurate with years of experience.

This position is responsible for providing project management and hands on assistance related to the braking systems used on DTO’s 66 Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) railcar fleet. This position will be responsible for analyzing the current performance of the braking system, performing hands on troubleshooting alongside technicians for complex braking related items and provide training to the railcar maintenance team on how to properly inspect and maintain the braking system.
The primary focus for this position will be the braking system on the railcars, but other projects or systems may be assigned as needed such as:
- Maintain records of air brake change out requirements to ensure all Federal, State and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) requirements are met.
- Assists DTO maintenance technicians with troubleshooting and repairs of mechanical or electrical railcar components (braking system) as a subject matter expert.
- Train maintenance technicians on air brake change out requirements for both scheduled and unscheduled events.
- Represent DTO at meetings with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), OEM, and Regional Transportation District specific to the subject of air brakes.
- Coordinate with DTO Procurement (Material Management) to ensure air brake inventory is maintained at satisfactory pre-defined levels.
- Establish and air brake test room capable of bench testing air brake valves noted as defective.
- Conducts air brake training programs and classroom presentations as a DTO instructor, including new hire training, specific to DTO’s EMU fleet.
- Collects data, identifies trends, performs research, and performs root cause analyses pertinent to DTO air brake issues and concerns.
- Analyzing failures on the shop floor, making repairs and training the mechanical team on how to troubleshoot and repair the braking system
Prior railroad experience and knowledge of braking systems is a plus, but is not required. Training materials will provide for the right candidate that shows a willingness to learn (this position requires self -learning) and the right mechanical and electrical aptitude. Pneumatic and electronic systems that will provide project oversight, training and testing requirements of the air brake systems on their fleet of Hyundai Rotem EMU fleet of commuter rail cars.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills (not required but a plus):
- Experience using computer based maintenance management tracking software such as EAM Trapeze or Asset Works
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic control systems and/or pneumatic systems
- Experience solving complex electrical/mechanical problems
- Experience tracking mechanical performance and analyzing that data to identify failure trends
- Experience working in the rail industry or other mechanical field
- Experience performing hands on repairs in a maintenance field, professionally or personally
- Experience in a training role in a maintenance environment.
Minimum Qualifications for this position include:
- A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Strong oral and written communications skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint) at an intermediate level or above.
- Proficiency in reading and comprehending electrical schematics and prints.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic control systems and/or pneumatic systems.
- Must possess ability to problem solve mechanical and electrical systems down to the root cause and develop solutions.
- Ability to read and comprehend electrical schematics and prints.
- Must be able to track failure data to identify failure trends
- Must have a valid state of CO driver’s license
- Must submit to pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol testing as prescribed by DTO
- Work locations will require the employee to work in office settings as well as in the maintenance shop.
- This is a safety sensitive position subject to the rules and regulations of the Federal Railroad Administration ad their drug and alcohol policy.
