Position Summary

The ophthalmic technician (medical assistant) position is one where you get to work directly with patients and often with the physicians in delivering care to our patients. Our technicians report high levels of satisfaction with their roles because they get to help save peoples sight each day. The days can be long due to our routine regional travel schedule, but we find the results we get to be well worth the effort.

Our ophthalmic technicians (medical assistants) gather information from patients, take images, notate information into patient charts, and help set up for exams and treatments - and much more. Great job for those interested in veterinary technician, medical assistant, behavioral technician, phlebotomist, radiology technician, and more. We will train the right candidates.

DUTIES

• Triage patients and record consistent and accurate documentation of patient's medical history
• Obtain patients chief complaint and screen (e.g., visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, measure IOP, pupillary check, ocular motility, dilate pupils, check blood pressure, etc.)
• Communicate with team members, team leader, physician about patient care and efficiency
  
• Communicate with patients using a caring tone and provide thorough communication before and after their visit with the physician, providing education as needed
  
• Prep exam room and patient charts for physician
  
• Perform macular OCT imaging. May perform other retinal imaging as needed.
  
• Prep for and assist with in-office procedures as needed
  
• May recruit patients for clinical trials as needed

• Able to work long and irregular hours, including overtime, and travel to different locations.
  
• Ability to master multiple computer systems (data entry and data retrieval)
  
• Ability to master ophthalmology and retina terminology
• Be able to provide proof of valid car insurance on primary vehicle
• A reliable means of transportation between local clinics during the work day (mileage is reimbursed)
• Willingness to drive company vehicle on day trips
• Qualify as an Austin Retina Drive
  • Austin Retina Associates approved drivers must:
    • Be 21 years of age or older
    • Possess a valid Texas driver's license
    • Have a satisfactory MVR that reflects 3 years minimum driving experience
    • Be able to provide proof of valid personal auto coverage for primary vehicle

Desired Attributes

• Experience in a busy optometry, ophthalmology, and/or retina clinic
  
• COA, COT, or COMT certification
  
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus

Physical Demands and Requirements

• Ability to view patient images and operate computer devices
• Ability to converse with patients - speaking and hearing
• Frequent use of a computer terminal, keyboard, and mouse
• Near constant standing and walking
• Manual dexterity to operate ophthalmic equipment

• Ability to drive company vehicle

Other Position Details

• Schedule varies depending on assigned role and/or assigned physician
• Monday to Friday schedule
• Five sets of scrubs provided at 90 days
• Travel within 120 miles is required (company-provided transportation, day trips only), which can mean early mornings and long days 1 to 3 days a week.
