Job Duties

The Western Tidewater Health District is seeking an energetic person to join our Women, Infants and Children (WIC) team as a Nutritionist Associate. The Nutritionist Associate independently determines nutrition eligibility of applicants/clients within the program guidelines and independently prescribes appropriate food packages. Duties include:

  • Assesses nutritional status/eligibility for program services by: dietary recall/food frequency history, assessing growth patterns, weight patterns, biochemical values and medical history. Independently sets dietary goals based on the assessment.
  • Provides patient counseling specific to the individual’s nutritional needs.
  • Makes referrals for high risk counseling with Nutritionist when appropriate.
  • Independently schedule WIC appointments
  • Maintain WIC records and compile reports
  • Secure and verify information needed for WIC income eligibility determination
  • Instruct clients about program guidelines
  • Measure heights and weights

This position is based in Suffolk but the Western Tidewater WIC Program services the City of Franklin, the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County as well as Pughsville. The Nutritionist Associate may be required to work at the other offices within the District on occasion.

The successful applicant will be required to enroll and complete CPA training (Competent Professional Authority) within 6 months

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess basic knowledge of nutrition
  • Must complete required training to obtain the Certification as a Competent Professional Authority (CPA) within 6 months of hire
  • Demonstrated ability to: interview clients & collect client information; interpret, document, calculate & compile routine data; routinely obtain blood sample/finger stick; provide patient education
  • Must be able to communicate and interact with a variety of patients and work effectively as a member of a health care team
  • Skills using computer systems and systems required to support the programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in nutrition or related field
  • Training or course work in Dietetics, food services, or a related area
  • Experience providing nutrition assessment and education to groups or individuals
  • Competent Professional Authority (CPA)/WIC experience
  • Basic knowledge of Nutritional Benchmarks
