The Principal Biosensing (Scientist) Engineer, Aligner R&D is responsible for developing new products and technologies and for supporting existing products to meet business objectives within R&D and the Aligner Product Group (PG). He/She/They will support existing products as needed including manufacturing support, regulatory support as well as market expansions The position is based out of the Global Innovation Center in Charlotte, NC and reports directly into R&D Director, Aligners.

The Principal Biosensing (Scientist) Engineer, Aligner R&D is responsible for developing new products and technologies and for supporting existing products to meet business objectives within R&D and the Aligner Product Group (PG). This role supports our R&D Director to develop and deliver on an innovation strategy that includes a technology roadmap to address current and anticipated customer needs to continue to transform dentistry and give patients healthy smiles.

Key accountabilities of the role:
  • Lead design and development of innovative biosensing technologies and biosensing aligner products based on customer needs to ensure a strong product portfolio and offering.
  • Ensures pipeline projects follow New Product Development procedures and Design Control.
  • Develop and maintain test equipment, fixtures and jigs.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, test methods, work instructions and other procedures for Aligner R&D team, as needed.
  • Test prototypes or products to the appropriate ISO or other relevant standards and analyze the data, as needed. Write protocols, test reports, and other documentation, as needed.
  • Ensure R&D projects/tasks meet agreed upon milestones with quality, within timelines and budget.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure successful project completion and launches (including Quality, Regulatory, Clinical, Manufacturing, Marketing and Legal).
  • Partner with KOLs, dentists, academic partners, research institutions, contract laboratories to support projects and/or initiatives as needed.
  • Support R&D operational processes to ensure medical device best practices.
  • Provide R&D support for existing products for Aligner R&D, as needed.
  • Provide technical assessments for internal or external opportunities, as needed.
  • Partner with IP Management to identify and manage overall patent portfolio for Aligner R&D and strive for early IP protection.
  • Manage contracts (including research and Key Opinion Leaders).
  • Develop and maintain yearly and quarterly budgets, as needed.
  • Comply with all relevant Dentsply Sirona procedures and policies including relevant QA regulations.
Required Background:
  • Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering or related field, PhD preferred.
  • At least 6 years’ experience within medical device industry supporting R&D, prior experience supporting orthodontics and/or aligners preferred.
  • At least 3 years leading teams within technology or product development with a proven track record of taking products to the market globally
  • Ability to identify, develop and retain talent.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally, up to 20%.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a matrix environment and capacity to both influence and develop partnerships cross Dental Product Groups.
