The primary function of an employee in this class is to operate, supervise, develop, coordinate, evaluate, market, and administer recreation programs. This includes coordinating summer camp, leagues, tournaments, and scheduling sports facilities. Primary work areas are determined by the Recreation Supervisor and Manager and may include the coordination of youth and adult athletic programs, special events and general recreation programs. An employee in this class works under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor. The principal duties of this class are performed in a public building environment or an outdoor environment that may include working evenings, weekends and in adverse weather conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans, initiates, coordinates, and directs recreational activities, including but not limited to, athletic events, youth and teen programs, outdoor recreation, youth summer camp, cultural arts, special interest classes, special events, and other related programs;
- Supervises program, staff, volunteers and participants including scheduling, training and evaluations;
- Hires staffing positions;
- Develops classes, clinics and sports camps;
- Secures sponsorships, awards, supplies and certificates as needed;
- Monitors contracts with vendors, suppliers, and contract employees;
- Coordinates activities with other recreation coordinators, supervisors, and City departments, arranging resource and facility schedules;
- Meets and coordinates with community interest groups;
- Maintains attendance, activity, supply, and equipment records;
- Makes periodic written and oral reports, including budget updates and projections;
- Implements and enforces risk management and safety policies, regulations, and procedures at all events
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Attends training classes and workshops;
- Performs general office and customer service duties as needed;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
- Objectives, philosophy, and implementation of recreational programming and needs assessment;
- Purposes, use and benefits of general and specific recreational and specialized programs;
- Planning, administration, organizational, scheduling, coordination, and promotional techniques related to recreation activities;
- Supervisory skills, employee evaluations, and training methods;
- Rules and regulations for games, sports, and activities used in program;
- Federal (OSHA) regulations and City policies regarding risk management and safe work and recreational practices.
Ability to:
- Assess community needs for recreation activities;
- Work independently with initiative and discretion, within established guidelines
- Develop, organize, implement, promote, and supervise recreational activities, including staffing, training, and scheduling;
- Maintain facilities, equipment, and materials in good working order and safe condition;
- Prepare and deliver oral and written reports, maintain attendance, activity, and financial records, and perform program surveys and evaluations;
- Operate sports and recreational equipment related to specific programs;
- Operate standard office equipment related to the position and operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
- Operate equipment related to sports and recreational activities, which may include a motor vehicle;
- Work evenings, weekends, and on holidays, as needed for events and program quality
- Communicate effectively, to establish and maintain working relationships with the public and other employees.
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation, sports administration preferred; or a related field;
- Two (2) years of FTE experience in recreation program planning and coordination, preferably in youth camps and athletic programs; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
