We are looking for a detail-oriented Assistant Controller (Higher Education Industry) to join the Business Operations (BizOps) practice. As a member of CLA’s BizOps practice, you will be an integral part of the CLA client service team and will provide customized accounting services to support them as they manage and grow their institutions.
In this role, you can either work independently/remotely-from-home or out of any one of our CLA office locations. You will be responsible for supervising the accounting team on each engagement. You are responsible for delivering timely and accurate financial statements as well as implementing financial and operational best practices related to the client’s specific industry.

Job Description:
- Record and analyze client’s financial information.
- Analyze and interpret financial information that client leaders need to make sound business decisions.
- Prepare financial reports for creditors, regulatory agencies, and tax authorities, and others.
- Independently prepare financial statements.
- Maintain knowledge of client’s organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards.
- Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of accounting software packages.
- Assist the accounting team to record complex transactions.
- Review complex account reconciliations prepared by the accounting team.
- Complete the monthly, quarterly, and annual adjusting and closing process.
- Provide detailed review of the general ledger, financial statements and required work papers
- Prepare work papers for the independent auditors, and tax preparers, if applicable.
- Understand grant and restricted fund accounting requirements and monitor compliance of applicable funds received.
- Review payroll and payroll tax compliance.
Required Education/Experience:
- BA/BS degree in Accounting or related field required.
- 5 years of relative work experience as a Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, or equivalent.
- Relevant experience in the Higher Education industry is strongly preferred.
- Public accounting experience preferred but not required.
- Aptitude for developing and maintaining a thorough working knowledge of accounting software and systems. Student Information System (SIS) or relational database such as; Banner, Colleague, or Jenzabar and QuickBooks experience is preferred.
- Proficiency with applicable software (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc).
- Capability to work in a fast-paced environment and deal with strong personalities.
- Ability to work independently from home or in-office.
Skills/Knowledge Needed:
- An understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (FASB/SFAS) or other comprehensive basis of accounting.
- Strong organization skills/goal orientation/self-motivation.
- Ability to handle pressure in a positive professional manner.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Communication that is clear, concise, and considerate of the needs of others.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and value the different contributions people make.

Compensation strategy statement:
Our approach to compensation emphasizes collaboration and career growth. We pay competitive wages and view compensation as an investment in our people. Factors such as geography, experience, education, skills, and knowledge may impact position of pay within the range. These same factors may cause starting pay to be below or above the posted range. For Colorado, the range for this position is $75,000 - 95,000.
