Based out of our regional office, conveniently located in Poughkeepsie, NY our Construction Group currently has openings in their Contracts Unit for a Senior Engineering Technician (SET) and a Principal Engineering Technician (PET). Starting salary for an SET is $35,298 and starting salary for a PET is $54,903. Work 37.5 hours a week with the potential for telecommuting. As a Senior Engineering Technician, you may perform inspection duties for construction projects, make & check engineering computations, prepare portions of written reports, or take part in field survey work. You may conduct field and/or laboratory tests of engineering materials such as concrete or earth samples. Specific program assignments and duties will be discussed at the time of your interview.

As a Principal Engineering Technician, you would perform complex and technical activities in support of various engineering projects and/or program areas. These activities might include preparing written reports and cost estimates of materials, supplies and equipment, preparing plans and or details utilizing CADD software, developing or reviewing contract plans and specifications, and being an assistant on a survey crew. You may supervise lower-level technicians in such areas as design, construction inspection, surveying, traffic engineering, maintenance, planning, engineering research, and material testing. Additionally, you may plan and schedule field and laboratory test work, review test reports, and develop testing equipment and procedures. You may also be expected to use various computer applications in the performance of your duties. Specific program assignments and duties will be discussed at the time of your interview.

Job duties for both positions may include:

- Review documentation conducive to extra work specification

- Perform claims engineering duties for active construction projects under the direction of the Contracts Supervisor

- Identify any problems and notify Supervisor and Engineer-In-Charge of any conflict in extra work specification of any work items

- Provide assistance and coordination of project file storage in accordance with department standards

- Receives, compiles and files data and information pertaining to contracts finalization

- Review and process change order in a timely fashion

At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State is required or otherwise must demonstrate the ability to meet the travel requirements of the position.

The minimum requirements for taking the Open Competitive examination for an SET are:

Either 1. TWO years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from a high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;

Or 2. 18 semester credit hours in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics or electronics technology AND ONE year of experience listed above in number 1

Or 3. 36 semester credit hours in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics or electronics technology.

The minimum requirements for taking the Open Competitive examination for a PET are:

Either 1. FOUR years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;

Or 2. an associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology AND TWO years of experience listed above in number 1;

Or 3. a bachelor's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.
