TECHNICIAN B, EHS, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Office, to assist with EHS-related laboratory, research, and analytical work. Responsibilities include collecting, processing, packaging, and preparing regulated medical waste (RMW), low-level radioactive waste (LLRW), and hazardous material samples for shipment and offsite treatment/disposal by a vendor; collecting lab plastics waste (LPW) for recycling with an external vendor; maintaining detailed records and databases; receiving, surveying, and delivering radioactive samples; inspecting hazardous waste satellite accumulation areas (SAAs) and main accumulation areas (MAA) and universal waste accumulation (UWA) areas; preparing hazardous material spill kits for laboratories; assisting higher level technicians with operating technical, experimental, and air monitoring equipment, air flow meters, autoclave validation equipment, and radiation survey and analysis equipment; installing waste containers in labs; performing regulatory-required radiation surveys on radioactive sample packages received and delivering samples to labs; performing weekly laboratory survey of the radioactive waste-processing laboratory; distributing and collecting radiation dosimeters and area monitors; and maintaining up-to-date training and working knowledge of regulations for packing/shipping hazardous materials. Additional duties may include documenting EHS surveys, facility/equipment decontamination and decommissioning, assisting with EHS monitoring programs, and participation in emergency response efforts.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: graduation from a two-year technical day school, good customer service and communication skills in service-oriented EHS environment, knowledge of survey techniques, theoretical understanding of the principles of radiation protection and biological safety, and ability to work unsupervised for periods of time. PREFERRED: computer skills; training and experience in EHS technology, including at least two years’ college education in environmental science, radiation health physics, industrial hygiene, or safety science; and two years’ practical EHS experience involving field measurements, analyses, and report preparation. Will assist with programs on the Cambridge campus and at satellite facilities (Bates-Middleton, Lincoln Lab-Lexington, Millstone/Haystack-Westford, and MIT Reactor-Cambridge) as necessary.
