Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
For Psychologists: A Ph.D./Psy.D. (or foreign equivalent) from an APA-accredited clinical or counseling psychology program, completion of an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship, with a minimum of one year, post licensure, clinical mental health work experience (and will obtain NY State licensure within one year of start date).

For Social Workers: A Master of Social Work (MSW) degree (foreign equivalent or higher) with a specialization in clinical social work, clinical practice or mental health. Licensed in NY State as an LCSW or if licensed in another state they should be able to obtain licensure in NYS within one year of start date. Must have a minimum of 1 year of postgraduate clinical mental health work experience.

For Licensed Mental Health Counselors: A Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Mental Health Counseling with a minimum of 2 years clinical mental health work experience post licensure (and will obtain NY State licensure within one year of start date).

Experience in behavioral risk assessment and mitigation in an outpatient treatment setting. Experience in providing clinical supervision, in particular with supervising and/or teaching interns and/or practicum students.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in a college mental health setting and/or in a higher education setting working with multi-unit, multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in behavioral threat assessment. Experience using Electronic medical record or other record keeping systems (e.g. Advocate, Medicat, Point and Click, and/or Titanium). Experience with training, conducting workshops and/or outreach programming. Member of the Association of Threat Assessment Professional. Proficiency in spoken and/or written languages other than English. Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, cultural humility, and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Brief Description of Duties:
The CARE Team is a university-based, multidisciplinary team committed to maintaining a safe and secure working and learning environment for Stony Brook University students and our campus community. The CARE Team addresses student behavior that may pose a threat to health and safety or disrupts University activity. The CARE Team responds to reports of these concerns through an individualized, coordinated, and thoughtful process that is intended to gather relevant information and intervene when appropriate to mitigate the risk presented.

The Assistant Director for the CARE Team oversees all aspects of the Mandated Assessment process including conducting mandated assessments and coordinating the completion of such by the University’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinicians. The mandated assessments are inclusive of identifying, evaluating, intervening, and mitigating risk of harm to self or others. The Assistant Director conducts mandated assessments focused on safety while identifying mitigating factors for the behaviors of concern exhibited by students. They inform and educate various campus stakeholders on issues related to behavioral threat assessment and the University’s CARE process. The Assistant Director remains informed of current and developing national trends and best practices regarding behavioral threat assessment including legal, ethical, and clinical issues, with emphasis on college campuses. The incumbent will provide training and supervision to the CAPS clinicians completing mandated assessments, including staff members and psychology interns.

  • In accordance with the national best practice standards, the Assistant Director conducts mandated assessments utilizing information received from various sources such as CARE reports, internet and social media platforms, collateral contacts, and consultations in order to formulate interventions and develop individualized management plans to minimize risk. Think strategically and respond operationally to issues or situations posing a threat to safety of the campus community.
  • Manage issues that are complex and sensitive in nature in coordination with multiple departments. Effectively assess and triage situations that involve students of concern who exhibit threatening, intimidating or disruptive behaviors, are experiencing emotional distress, and may present with complex personality traits or behavioral tendencies.
  • In consultation, create and implement individualized management and risk mitigation plans. Provide oversight and ensure implementation of these individualized management plans in coordination with other stakeholders and along with the student of concern. Work with the student of concern to clarify behavioral expectations within a college community. Advocate for student needs, especially as they relate to the individualized management plan.
  • Organize and report all new cases and status updates to the CARE Team and to VP/AVP during weekly meetings as needed. Ensure that all relevant information is up to date and is documented systematically and provide weekly updates on management plans to the CARE Team. Work closely with the Care Case Manager to ensure systematic workflow and appropriate allocation of services. Assist in policy and procedure development for the University CARE process. Lead the CARE Team apprenticeship training for APA interns and other social work interns as needed.
  • Provide diplomatically nuanced consultation and manage expectations of academic departments, faculty, and staff. Develop strong collegial work relationships with team members, community members, and internal and external stakeholders such as the Student Support Team, University Police, hospitals, and mobile crisis units. Provide on call back up for the CARE Director for crisis incidents during weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
