The successful candidate for this position will conduct research in single-stranded DNA virus assembly and packaging. This includes developing protocols, designing and performing experiments, summarizing and interpreting experiment data, and general lab maintenance. submitting research reports in laboratory setting.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Cleaning and sterilizing of labware used for research.
  • Maintenance of mutant viral stocks and bacterial strains.
  • Following detailed protocols for genetic, biochemical, and biophysical assays
  • Generating, structurally guided, site-specific viral mutants and cloned viral genes to dissect the mechanisms of capsid assembly and single-stranded DNA packaging.
  • Record keeping, making observations, analyzing data, and interpreting experimental results.
  • Preparation of technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative results
  • Additional duties may be assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Have a good understanding of bacterial physiology as it relates to bacteriophage infection.
  • Knowledge of culturing bacteria sand bacteriophages and with sterile technique
  • Ability to work with single-stranded DNA and protein purification.
  • Skills in analyzing sequence dataExcellent note-taking skills, detail-oriented
  • Ability to perform experiments and analyze experimental data independently

Minimum Qualifications
  • Previous bacteriophage laboratory experience
  • Molecular biology experience in cloning and in vitro site-directed mutagenesis.
  • Biochemical and biophysical experience in protein purification, virus purification, single-stranded DNA purification, and equilibrium and rate zonal sedimentation.
  • High School Diploma or equivilant learning attained through experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with protein purification, virus purification, single-stranded DNA purification, equilibrium and rate zonal sedimentation.
  • Prior experience working with prokaryotic viruses.
  • Prior experience with prokaryotic genetics
  • B.S. degree in microbiology or a related expertise.
