Bastyr University, a private regionally accredited institution, is accepting applications for a gardener position in the Botanical Medicine department at the Kenmore, WA campus.
Assist the Garden Supervisor in all aspects of garden/greenhouse/farm stewardship, administration, maintenance, and community-building.
- Steward various aspects of regenerative production and restoration including, but not limited to: propagation, transplanting, watering, IPM, weed management, cultivation, harvesting, seed saving, medicinal herb processing, and recordkeeping.
- Supervise and train Work-Study student gardeners and volunteers. Delegate labor amongst them and support nourishing team dynamics. Manage administrative and scheduling duties for all work-study and volunteer gardeners.
- Maintain associated greenhouses, materials bays, irrigation systems, water catchments, storage systems, etc. necessary for Gardens operations.
- Support the fulfillment of medicinal plant and produce harvest targets for Herb Lab, markets, CSAs, classroom curricula, and programming needs.
- Assist in oversight and implementation of events, markets, and activities at the Gardens. Assist in education, marketing, promotion, etc. activities supporting these events.
- Assist with planning, maintenance, installation, planning, mapping, and restoration of the Sacred Seeds Ethnobotanical Trail.
Work Schedule: Tuesday - Friday, 8:30am - 5pm, 32 hours per week
- Must have 2-3 years of production-focused regenerative garden, farming, or landscaping experience
- Must have a strong knowledge of medicinal and vegetable plants, propagation methods, cultivation, IPM, harvesting, medicinal plant processing methods, nursery/greenhouse management
- Familiar with caring for both landscapes and people in all weather conditions - experience working outdoors in the Pacific NW and in education settings helpful
- Training in native plants, ethnobotany, and restoration practices preferred
- Comfort with recordkeeping, computer and phone data applications, and organizing information
- Familiarity with racial and social justice concepts and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion concepts as they relate to native plants and farming/gardening
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical/manual tasks outdoors in all weather conditions
- Enthusiasm, ability to improvise and adapt, and proactive attitude is a must
- Strong communication skills, affinity to teamwork, and ability to receive instruction well and engage in clear communication to adapt goals to daily fluctuations in environment and priorities
