Duties
As the Maintenance Mechanic (Carpenter/Painter), the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:
- Perform routine carpenter duties to include assembly and installation of various items.
- Measure, cut, repair, install and modify items such as concrete forms, roof decking, rafters, walls, staircases, windows, and frames, trim work, and furniture/cabinets, framework, doors, flooring, ceiling, suspended ceiling systems, finished paneling, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams.
- Assemble items with a variety of joining techniques.
- Use wood, metal and various composite materials when installing or replacing interior partitions, flooring panels, flooring panels, suspending ceilings and counter tops and moldings.
- Operate and use a wide variety of machines and tools. Operate and use carpentry tools by setting-up, adjusting, maintaining tools to meet required specifications.
- Plan, measure and lay out carpentry materials by interpreting complex or incomplete instructions, sketches, blueprints, building codes and using shop mathematics.
- Responsible for complete repair, replacement, adjustment and preventative maintenance of all painted surfaces to ensure proper conditions.
- Use standard tools and equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray guns, trowels, screeds, straight edges, viscosity testers, graining devices and west and other thickness gauges.
- Prepare surfaces and apply coating techniques that will ensure surfaces have a smooth-textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
- Prepare surface for plaster application. Repair and patch existing surfaces.
- Design lay out. and decorate signs and execute freehand and mechanical lettering.
- Make stencils, templates, or paper patterns as necessary, to reproduce designs or shapes.
The incumbent will be required to possess and maintain a current, valid state driver's license. A legible copy of the selectee's current, valid state driver's license will be required immediately upon selection.

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving walking, standing, bending, stooping, lifting, working overhead and crawling. Incumbent must be able to to climb ladders and scaffolding and operate bucket truck. Incumbent must be able to lift loads of up to fifty (50) lbs. Frequently, work will be performed in cramped and awkward positions, including crawlspaces. Also, work is performed on interior and exterior of buildings. work performed is of a precise nature requiring prolonged concentration. Incumbent works at times under conditions of extreme stress and must be able to interact effectively with medical staff and perform work in a calm, analytical manner.
Working Conditions: Incumbent works around and with hazardous mechanical and electrical equipment with the potential for serious injury and/or death. Physical agility and dexterity are required while working around equipment. Incumbent works in close quarters and cramped positions, in service rooms, sub-basement areas and other areas with marginal ventilation. Work is performed in engineering and shop areas, laboratories, offices, and many types of patient areas. Incumbent will sometimes be required to work in environments where the hazards of asbestos, burns, exposure to chemicals, radiation, and contagious diseases exist and will be exposed to various elements of weather when working outside. Incumbent must know and follow procedures for working in areas of infection, radiation, and use all appropriate safety tools, clothing, and other personal protective equipment to protect himself/herself, other staff, patients and visitors at all times.

Qualifications
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
