Wardrobe Technician – Costume Characters
Permanent Position
Hold your breath and dive into the action: are you ready to work for one of Cirque du Soleil’s most iconic shows? We are looking for a Wardrobe Technician – Costume Characters whose role, as a part of the Wardrobe team, will pattern, construct and finish costume characters for Cirque Du Soleil Entertainment Group and Affiliate touring productions. Reporting to the management team, all Technicians are expected to support the show and their co-workers in a positive and professional manner. All duties are to be performed in accordance with department and property policies, practices, and procedures.
The Wardrobe Technician - Costume Characters will:
- Work with a team of costume professionals including craftspeople, drapers, puppet builders and sculptors;
- Construct and repair character costumes using industrial and domestic sewing machines and various power tools;
- Construct costumes by using craft techniques such as carving, sculpting, casting and barging;
- Work with a variety of fabrics and materials including a high percentage of foam (minicell, scot foam, upholstery) stretch fabrics and plush;
- Use a variety of adhesives, paint and general craft techniques;
- Assist Costume team with construction solutions;
- Document maintenance practices and repair notes, as needed;
- Assist with the inventory, ordering and tracking of the department's supplies and equipment;
- Maintain a safe working environment at all times, by conforming to all established safety policies and procedures; Be available for required yearly safety classes;
- Help with organization and cleanliness of the workspace;
- Perform all other job-related duties as needed, such as, but not limited to: updating tracking time tracking systems, assist in tracking and ordering of shop supplies, assisting in PR events, updating costume inventory when needed, and keeping updated on yearly OSHA classes.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- At least three years of previous experience as a professional Costume/Craft Technician, including experience in costume repairs and maintenance for a large-scale production show;
- High School diploma or equivalent;
- Working knowledge of the following: traditional and specialty stitching techniques, various fabrics and craft materials, as well as various foams, glues and costume character construction techniques;
- Previous large-scale costume construction experience;
- Previous experience working with home/industrial sewing machines and specialty machines;
- Previous experience using power tools, sculpting tools and PPE knowledge;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with co-workers;
- Professional appearance and demeanor;
- Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays;
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken;
- 10-hour OSHA course completion card required;
- Previous experience working in a multicultural group environment;
- Previous experience working in a similar theatrical setting;
- Verification of the right to work in the United States for Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, as demonstrated by completion of the Form I-9 upon hire and the submission of acceptable documentation (as noted on the Form I-9) verifying one’s identity and work authorization;
