Job description
Mill Creek Early Childhood Program is looking for someone who enjoys cooking with nutrition and children in mind. We serve fresh vegetables and fruits and strive to introduce the children to various flavors and textures. Currently we prepare and serve breakfast, lunch and 2 snacks for an average of 50 children per day. This position will start off part time and grow into a full-time position if teaching also interests you.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Food Preparation and Serving Plans, prepares and serves attractive and nutritionally balanced meals for the children, promoting and reinforcing good nutritional habits; trying new foods, portion control and a balanced diet. Plans proper amounts of ingredients to prepare menu items sufficient for the number of children to be served. Maintain food budget. Ensures all meals are served to temperature and on time. Ensure that food supplies are securely stored. Wearing proper cooking attire (i.e. apron, hat or hair net, gloves, etc.). Using proper dishwashing methods. Ensuring that all cooking related areas and equipment are clean and in good working order at all times. Cleaning kitchen areas after each meal is served. Alert the Director to maintenance requests asking for unsafe equipment to be removed and/or assistance with cleaning difficult to clean food preparation areas. Order food and supplies as necessary. Enhance school reputation by maintaining a kitchen that is appealing for tours/guests. Works to support and enhance Mill Creek ECP’s mission and vision.
Education/Experience:
- A High School Diploma or GED is required. Two years’ experience cooking for and serving large groups of people is required. School lunch experience desirable.
Licenses, Certifications, Registrations:
- Food Handler Manager Certification required within the first two months of employment. Must possess a valid Driver’s License, a reliable automobile, and auto insurance. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must complete online Mandated Reporter Training Course within first week of employment and meet all DCFS requirements and trainings.
Knowledge, Skills and Other Abilities:
- Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Knowledge of and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and web browsers effectively. Knowledge of recipe development, general nutrition and large quantity food preparation. Knowledge of and ability to apply basic food preparation methods. Ability to maintain all equipment used in cooking, food preparation, food storage and cleaning/sanitation in a safe and efficient manner. Ability to adapt to changes (i.e. food substitutions and numbers served). Good written and oral communications skills. Good organizational skills. Ability to make independent decisions in a logical, responsible and compassionate manner. Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse group of staff and clients. Knowledge of basic mathematics, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
